I am about to narrate a real time experience in which Motivation proves to be a key factor in achieving the most loved phrase "Nothing Succeeds Like Success".
In the IT Industry we want to live success every day, in our every task and in our every activity, so how to get about it or to put it straight how to Succeed.
Let’s start with defining the Success which may be in my words that I can think loudly are
- Achieving the expected task.
- Achieving the expected task in a smarter way.
- Achieving the expected task in a smarter way and delivering the exact value.
- Achieving the expected task in a smarter way and delivering more than the exact value.
Too long, can you see one thing in these lines, lines are getting longer :-), observe more closely they mean more accuracy, even more closely they mean perfection.
There are many ways you can put these lines into practice and there are many theories for the same, but all of these theories and philosophies require a key word which is Motivation where to get it from? Big Question, How to get it? Another big question.
Lets define what motivates me, hrmm.. tricky question, I a motivated to
- Watch a movie.
- Take my salary and bonus right in time.
- Watch a TV serial.
- Watch a cartoon show.
- Socialize.
- Fun and Frolic.
- Birthday parties.
- Doing nothing but just check emails and pass the time.
- Long list of things for which I have default motivation and no special efforts are required to
get involved into and turn me on. Real question, how to bring that motivation into the
work area.
So the first thought that comes in my mind is what is that which is in between getting me "Success" and my current position. My answer to the same is
- May be I think or I am not sure but this (one assumed way) is the right way to achieve
my task.
- May be I really really do not know what is exactly required I am just assuming.
- May be I know only a small part
- May be…
So the current state of my mind before beginning of my task is a fluid state which is very unclear and fragile so the first task is to make the direction clear, so how do I do that, I can do that by answering the following questions.
- What is the exact requirement and who can answer the exact requirement?
- The answer to this question lies in the following options
o The answer is with the client / person.
o The answer lies within a specification document.
o The answer lies with the colleague next desk.
- What is the exact way I am going to post my question to get the requirement in the form I
can understand?
- I firmly believe that “There are only questions which are not asked and there are no silly
questions” but at the same time it is really required to search our own pockets to make
sure that
o What is my current position and default expectations from me?
o Have I done the basic homework to ensure that I have defined my UNKNOWN or in other
words have I gathered the words for my question? Also to put it straight am i convinced by
my own question what would be my own reaction if I was to face such a question :-)
The two steps above will give exact words for my question and the exact location where / whom the question needs to be asked and maximum times reaching the exact words for the question is a exercise, the more efficiently it is done, the better and faster the responses are. Simply because at this point you had
- Done your home work by searching your own pockets
- And more importantly I have started to get involved :-), being involved is motivaton...
perhaps yes.
- And yes right questions fetches right responses and more importantly faster responses.
The answers I get from the above two steps will give me … what? A thin more or less clear or slightly hazy picture which will nearly outline
- Inputs for my task
- Process I need to follow to achieve my task
- Output of my task
This is really important since I am now have a direction and I am able to see what is expected and I am now able to define
- What is that I am strong into, here here.. it’s a tempting time to get quickly started with
what I know but I need to hold on.
- I am also getting an idea now about what I do not know and it’s a huge temptation to push
it to a later stage and face it when the actual time comes and is required.
- But the second point is the one which can really stand in between the expected output or
“SUCCESS” and my considerable time, energy and efficiency could go in to working around
them and at times these efforts can be wasted because of not getting answers in right
time.
- The output of my task is the exact requirement and I need to make it sure that “YES” this
is what is required to touch the finish line.
Now what next… Repeat the sequence of questions as per above steps to make things more clear
so that I come to know exactly
- What is that I do not know, and what are ways to get around them and most importantly
what are the right ways for the same? By knowing right ways I will come to know about
the do nots or don'ts list.
- This can be achieved by asking questions once again and reaching the correct logical end.
Why is this exercise required at all, it is always easy to go about doing things from the point you know get the unknowns resolved when ever we actually require to tackle them but I firmly believe
- UNKNOWN IS AN RISK
- RISK IS A THREAT
- CONFRONT THE THREAT FIRST
- BEYOND THE THREAT THERE IS VICTORY
What is result of the this exercise
- I now know the exact input for my task
- I have now uncovered the unknowns so they are no more a risk.
- I can plan my activities to achieve the finish line can I do them better and the best… the
answer is definitely YES am I more motivated and move involved... YES I AM.
- Am I more involved and more motivated by the mere feeling of things getting turned into
reality… YES I AM because I am motivated by the feeling that I am going to succeed.
I now feel more motivated and more trustworthy to myself claim for my value and more motivated to promote myself to realize more… CERTAINLY YES.
